Local authorities are having no option but to take a harder line with individual as council tax liabilities reach an “unsustainable level” of £2.5bn.
It is believed that approximately 32 per cent of local authorities in the UK used the issuing of bankruptcy petitions and subsequent orders to recover council tax arrears last year. This is an increase from the 20 per cent in 2009/2010.
