Major supermarket chain Asda has experienced a fall in sales of  5.8{06aeb1921e0b802d2bd9c766bc98fb11cc6a46c2b0593ed9c88a0e29cf417a34} during the quarter that included Christmas – its biggest 3 monthly dip on record.

The business, owned by Walmart, saw revenue fall 4.7{06aeb1921e0b802d2bd9c766bc98fb11cc6a46c2b0593ed9c88a0e29cf417a34} over the year.

Chief executive of Asda, Andy Clarke stated that 2015 had been a “difficult year”.

Morrisons and Tesco conversely beat forecasts while Sainsbury, the weakest, saw sales fall just 0.4{06aeb1921e0b802d2bd9c766bc98fb11cc6a46c2b0593ed9c88a0e29cf417a34} over the fourth quarter.  Moreover a\nd in contrast to Asda, discounters Aldi and Lidl, are both flourishing and expanding rapidly.

Mr Clarke said the UK retail market was undergoing “significant and permanent structural change”.

 

The company forecast that 2016 was once again likely to be a competitive year for the sector as a whole.

 

Parent firm Walmart (the biggest retailing chain in the world), saw sales rise 0.6{06aeb1921e0b802d2bd9c766bc98fb11cc6a46c2b0593ed9c88a0e29cf417a34} over the fourth quarter, its sixth quarterly rise in a row.

But Walmart has reduced forecast for the year, as it envisages sales to be flat.

The company’s shares fell 4{06aeb1921e0b802d2bd9c766bc98fb11cc6a46c2b0593ed9c88a0e29cf417a34} in afternoon trading.
